As a commercial designer, most of my career has been devoted to communicating other’s concepts and messages. Sometimes those messages had profound social significance. At other times they were purely profit motivated. The final phase of my work will communicate the beauty I see around me every day in Northern California, not merely for decorative purposes, but to provoke others to see their environment more clearly and intensely and to explore the psychological aspects of perception.
The purpose of art is to attempt to answer the two big questions.
1. What does it mean to be human?
2. Why are we here?
By exploring, and hopefully heightening, our perception of the physical world I will attack question #1. By questioning the relevance of the physical world to our psychic reality I merely approach question #2.
As I have frequently bent my client’s assignments to fulfill of my own creative urges, I will apply the tools of commercial communication to the fulfillment of my late-career objectives. Thus, my production may, at times, resemble commercial design. I hope public awareness can see beyond these superficial similarities.
